[highlighted]A Welcome from your Welfare Reps[/highlighted]
Welcome all Freshers, and congratulations on meeting your offers! We hope that you’ve had a lovely summer. We’re Melissa and Jonathan, your JCR Welfare Reps at Oriel for the coming academic year. We’re both 2nd year students, studying Engineering (Ed) and PPE (Freya). This letter is just to say “hello!” and explain a little bit about our roles in college to you.
We are both fully-elected members of the JCR committee, so if you have any welfare-related concerns do not hesitate to let us know about them. We can help to communicate these concerns to the JCR, to other members of the welfare team in college, and to wider university services if necessary. We’ll also be setting up many lovely events throughout the year for you all to take a break and have a chat. This will include the ever-popular JCR Welfare Tea, where you can enjoy some free tea and cake with us, and we’ll be following in the footsteps of our brilliant former Welfare Reps (George Sackman and Jess Dark, now both 3rd years) by continuing the world famous Friday Film Nights in the JCR. These provide great opportunities to take a break from the intensive workload here at Oxford.
We are also Peer Supporters; fellow students at Oriel who are available to have a chat at any time about anything that’s worrying you. These concerns can be academic, social or otherwise. Every Peer Supporter undergoes training at the Oxford University Counselling Service (not as scary as it sounds, we promise!) and everything you tell us will be confidential. And, perhaps most importantly, we will always have a biscuit (or cake if you’re lucky!) for you in our room. Check out the Welfare Section on the website for a list of all the Peer Supporters (including some rather unflattering mugshots so you know who we all are), and you’ll meet us all during Freshers’ Week!
In terms of what’s going on in Freshers’ Week, we’ve got a few things set up for you guys (and we’ll be at the important college-organised events too):
– Games on 3rd quad: bring your competitive side! (Thursday afternoon)
– Tea & Toast, in the JCR, after club nights if you’ve had a wee bit too much and could use something carbohydrate-y to soak up the alcohol (Sunday through Friday, 12:00 – 02:00). This will be run by ourselves and the other Peer Supporters in college.
– Welfare Brunch, in the JCR – there will be pancakes, Nutella and lots of other fancy foodstuffs on offer. This is an informal event which gives you the chance to meet the extensive Oriel Welfare team, including the Deans, the LGBTQ rep, and the other Peer Supporters we have here. (Sunday, 11:00 – 12:30)
– Welfare/Medical Meeting, in the Harris Lecture Theatre. (Wednesday, 1:45pm)
Looking forward to meeting you all!
Jonathan and Melissa xx
