Welcome to Oriel!

The Junior Common Room (or JCR) is the community of undergraduate students at Oriel College.

We have a smaller student population than the average Oxford college – about 90 to 100 in each cohort, and around 350 in total – which lends us a uniquely intimate and convivial atmosphere. This makes it easy to get to know lots of different people, and college spirit and camaraderie run deep.

Oriel College JCR Public Statement 🏳️‍⚧️

Oriel JCR notes the controversy surrounding the invitation of Kathleen Stock to speak at the Oxford Union. As a student body we would like to reiterate our ongoing support for transgender and gender nonconforming students, and will continually seek to support them in navigating a positive experience in Oxford. Oriel College JCR is committed to ensuring all its members feel welcome regardless of identity, as set out in the College’s Equality and Diversity Policy. As a JCR, we will offer full assistance to any student faced with discrimination.

This JCR supports Freedom of Speech for all, and that includes, of course, Professor Kathleen Stock. However, we wonder what is being achieved, in the context of the social discourse surrounding transgender rights, through hosting this event. We do not feel that this event will be constructive for conversations surrounding trans rights. However, given that it is planned, we seek to express our disagreement with the way it has been formatted. We appreciate the efforts of the Union to allow for student questioning. However, we believe that in the need for a more critical appraisal of sensitive ideas, it would be more constructive to have a formal debate with Stock representing one of multiple speakers of varying opinions, with the speakers being of equal status. A format in which students are called up to address the speaker is not equal to a format in which the speakers are individuals of social prominence.

We encourage members of Oriel JCR to attend Stock’s talk at the Oxford Union, in order to utilise the event as a space to challenge any views they disagree with. We support any students who seek to express their political opinions, including the right to peaceful protest.

This Tuesday come down to the bar at 9pm for twist on the usual pub quiz in the form of an open mix night specifically for music around the world. We will also be having students coming from Magdalen and University Colleges coming down to our bar. There will be prizes (i.e. G&D vouchers) for the best three open mic performances.

Last night, Oriel held its first Multicultural For

Last night, Oriel held its first Multicultural Formal Hall!

This came about from a proposition from our wonderful Equalities and Access Officer @chikcenkace , with input and photos from our JCR President @thephoebstar, help from our International Officer @socialtarunism , and the initial idea from @tomszwarcer . It was executed brilliantly by the hall and catering team.

The multicultural formal is an occasion in which students can deviate from the commonly seen suits and equivalent of formal attire and fully embrace the freedom of expression Oriel college’s formal hall permits. Therefore, students came along wearing their national formal dress, and a four-course meal inspired by dishes from around the globe was served. It was a wonderful atmosphere and we hope to discuss continuing such events on a more regular basis!

Thanks to the generosity of the kitchen, the multicultural formal hall will now feature 4 courses from 4 unique cuisines!
I must assure you that this was not an attempt to force a pun of the hall taking you on a mouthwatering journey across the 4 corners of the globe (which it absolutely will), but rather a means by which the kitchen can accommodate the additional dishes they could not see being discluded from the menu.
While it may not seem so at times, the kitchen is home to a breadth of culinary experts from around the world and the multicultural formal has presented a unique opportunity for them to share the dishes closest to their hearts.
They would love to see as many people attend to share some of their homely love to Oriel's people!
So remember to bring your cultural formal attire, even if this is the traditional jacket and tie, back from the vac for the best hall of term!
