Whately Society

Richard Whately: an English rhetorician, logician, economist, and theologian who also served as Anglican Archbishop of Dublin, and one time fellow of Oriel. Whilst at Oxford his white hat, rough white coat, and huge white dog earned for him the sobriquet of the White Bear.

The Whately Society is a forum for the discussion of politics, philosophy, current affairs and the arts. Bi-weekly discussion groups begin with a brief presentation on the issue and then discussion over wine and nibbles, and are open to members of the JCR, MCR, SCR, and their guests.

Past discussion topics include:

  • “Why we need a United States of Europe, now more than ever”
  • “101 ways to incur ethical obligations by your mere existence”
  • “Is Monarchy outdated?”
  • “Is Democracy always a good thing?”
  • “Is competition good for Public Services?”

The current co-chairs of the Innes Taylor, Patrick Penzo and Zachary Spiro; the MCR rep is Blake Ewing.
